Over the years, cellular technology has improved immensely. It has made communications much better than it was before. Till a few decade back, it was only the rich people who could afford purchasing cell phones because of the high rate of calls. But, with better technology and decline in the prices of cell phones, their usage increased. Today, one cannot imagine life without a cell phone. The same goes for the people who are sent to prisons for crimes. Smuggling of contraband cell phones inside the prison has become quite common and no matter how careful the prison officials, they do find a way to smuggle the cell phones inside. While some inmates use them to reach out to their family and friends, others use it to organize criminal activities in the outside world. No matter what the reason, the contraband cell phones have to be stopped in some manner.
The lives of hundreds of prison officials have been risked because of the use of these cell phones by inmates. One of the people who has experienced it is Robert Johnson. He worked at a Florida prison for many years and was one of the top guards. He has spent day and night working to confiscate the illegal materials from the possessions of the inmates. Not everyone was happy with the searches and would threaten him. But, he rarely took them seriously since he thought that there was no way they could pull it off from the prison. But, he was wrong. One of the agitated and angry inmates had contacted his friend outside the prison using the contraband phones and asked him to teach a lesson to Robert. One morning, while Robert was getting ready to leave for work, some goons entered his home and shot him many times. He took the bullets himself to save his wife who was sleeping in the bedroom. He was immediately rushed to the hospital and operated on. He survived the attack and spent his retirement days talking about the need for technology to stop the use of contraband phones inside the prison.
Securus Technologies is one such prison technology company that has been developing products to help prisons become safer. Their newest addition is the Wireless Containment System that allows the prison officials to restrict the use of cell phones even if they are unable to stop its smuggle. Robert Johnson has been working with the company for years helping it develop and install the system in prisons across the country.
